‘Standeth Bergstrom seethed’ at the ‘annoying crayfish’ and his ‘discontent minors’. Finding his ‘boomerang stale’, he took his ‘boo-boo gun’ and sent the ‘ephemeral vermin’ to ‘shucks crematoria’.

The artist set herself the challenge of using as much of the original book illustration composition as possible while staying true to the surreal nature of the Spam Tales series. For example, the three large figures at the table are original but are clearly altered. The 'annoying crayfish' was a seated man from elsewhere in the book, brought in with his table to replace the original seated man at the end of the table in this illustration. The 'discontent minors' crayfish are featured in a limited print series 'collage' of their own, Flight of the Crayfish.

What is a Spam Tale?

Spam Tales is a series of collages. The wording for each collage is composed of spam email subjects and senders, collected over a period of months. They are written out on paper, and re-written or cut out and shuffled about until there something resembling cohesiveness, and an engaging mini story/spiel. Some collages incorporate the word recognition anti-spam mechanism for posting on Facebook. Spam and anti-spam word combinations have been chosen for their random, nonsense quality.

The juxtaposition of modern technology and turn of the century or Victorian imagery, paired with some very weird wording leads to pleasingly Surreal results. Most of the Spam Tales read like advertising spiels and the artist does not shy away from that fact. She enjoys perusing Victorian advertising and feels that some of the extravagant claims made back then are not so different to those made now in Spam.

2º: A butterfly installation inspired by Global Warming.

This sculpture has been named 2º for two reasons:

it incorporates the glass bubbles from a broken Gallileo thermometer which go up in two degree increments
the Copenhagen Accord agreeing to not allow more than two degrees of overall global warming above pre-Industrial levels.

Actual butterfly species are being affected by increasing temperatures with some moving to higher altitudes, or away from the equator towards the poles, in response.

Although such potentially disastrous circumstances inspired the work, the idea is behind it is to uplift the viewer on contemplating it, rather than force feed a message. It is up to the viewer/buyer whether they wish to understand more by visiting this very website. The artist realises that sometimes it is enough to just enjoy art for art's sake. This is is why the 2º group installation is being subsequently divided up for individual sale rather than as one piece.

Taken to capture a new hair cut, I liked the multiple image motion blur. After converting it to a greyscale image I applied a diffused glow filter to add texture and mood. A person has many sides or layers so this is one way to express mine.

I found this caterpillar while gardening, checking out what was chewing up my pot plants. I find the term 'green consumer' ironic. The title has a double meaning for both words which is why the grub is on a shiney mesh and not a luscious leaf.

You may find browsing this site useful as a reference point for what you would like to purchase over the phone via credit card, international money order, or direct funds transfer. I do take commissions.

Craftsmanship Ox was created while Spam Tales: Craftsmanship Ox, Erasmus Howard was a work in progress. I liked this collage so much I felt it was worthy of, and effective in, another composition and well suited to Avant Card's post card format. It's the most complicated, non-texture* collage I have done to date in terms of the number of actual pieces that are assembled and layered (twenty two parts), as well as the number of original image sources used (five different books).

This is the first colour paper butterfly using paper from contemporary magazines. She is named after singer/song writer/actress Delta Goodrem since the wings are made up of an image of her hair.

About my collages

Do you photocopy old books or actually cut them up?

Both depending on the book.

Rest assured only the most decrepit antique and vintage books are used in my art. Anything better - slight damage but not falling apart much, only minor tears, or a few dog ears - is kept in my small collection for future reference.

When making black and white paper butteflies I consult a book from my collection: Wood's Natural History. Funnily enough the book that started it all as far as the use of Victorian images, was this very book. I still have and use that first coverless, unbound, pages missing, child addled copy. My father attained it for me from Neil, a family friend. Neil ran a local, little, second hand bookshop that has now been closed for some years. It wasn't until I recently when got my 'good' copy that I was able to identify the book.

It's fairly easy to tell when I've photocopied and when I use actual bits from a book since I do not attempt to age the photocopy. Thus the old book collages have a slight buff or cream tone while the photocopy collages tend to be a bright white. However there is a third possibility and that is the hardware catalogue collages which are also offwhite. I sometimes work a small part or two from a hardware catalogue into a book paper collage.

Whatever the age or source of the paper, if you own a paper work of art it is best you display it away from direct sunlight and not where sunlight will be strongly reflected onto it.

I have a mixed media sculpture in this show. It took me almost 30 hours to make so there's more to it than could be captured in one image. What you see here is not visible as the sculpture has been displayed (it's got a wall directly behind it). This is just the back! You will have to visit the show to see the front.

'The competition, for both 2d and 3d artwork, is advertised nationally, with the finalists (approximately 40 – 50 short listed entries) being exhibited at BHCAC from the 18 – 30 August

The theme this year has been designed to attract attention and stimulate discussion of what '…home…' means to the diverse community of Australia in an ever changing cultural, economic and political climate.

The judging panel consisted of 5 judges from the art industry, where approximately 50 works will be selected to be included in the exhibition. The Judging Criteria is based on three areas:

1. Response to the theme of '…home…'
2. Creativity of expression
3. Application of technique'

Lime and Soda is about how the increased amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere affects our oceans. The title refers to the calcium compound not the fruit. The ocean naturally absorbs carbon dioxide but if it continues to absorb at the current rate we will see acidification. This affects the entire ocean food chain from the tiniest creatures upwards due to the negative affect on seashell integrity. The scrimshawed, seagull craniums depict a carbonic acid molecule and the degradation* of a seashell in simulated, acidified ocean water. Adding lime to seawater has been suggested as a way to sequester carbon dioxide.

*Formerly Roost. This sculpture was damaged while on display requiring the complete replacement of all the bats. All new, slightly bigger (from approximately 1omm wingspan to 15mm), and more detailed bats were sculpted. In addition to this, the surface of the driftwood was resurfaced and treated with a beeswax turpentine preservative to improve long term stability. A fresh, more dynamic - focal point was created for the work through the revised placement of the bats, from the side of the piece to the corner.

The Pod Series was about taking the miniature bat, construction technique created for Roost to a more refined level. Series I bats had wings with bones made of rolled oatmeal paper. Series II bats have fine wire through the arms and first fingers. All of the bats are modelled on an indigenous fruit bat, the grey-headed flying fox.

Note: All of Series I and II Pods have sold out. More will be made and available for sale through Wunderkammer.

Why small, why not make bigger pieces?

Often people ask me "Why small, why not make bigger pieces?". There are several reasons both practical and creative.

The creative reasons take the lead for me. I have always liked little things, and details ever since I was a child playing with bugs in the garden or in the classroom doll house before school each morning. Many of my favourite artists create small/detailed art. So suppose I have a tendency to conceive of these things since it's what I enjoy. Secondly the found materials I regularly use dictate the scale of the piece in my mind. Proportion and scale are very important to my way of thinking.

The practical side is that thinking about petite projects and making them is easier when you're doing most of it at a desk the size of an A1 page, and other parts on a home workshop bench. However it's more of a happy coincidence than the studio environment actually dictating the scale.

Lastly, the reason many artists choose to work on a smaller scale - particularly painters - is that you can achieve a greater quality of finish over a smaller area, in a quicker time. This allows the artist a lower selling price based on hours put into the work, thus making the art more affordable to those who would like to own it.

Off the Kerb , artist run gallery and studios is celebrating its 2nd birthday with a show exploring the theme of obsession.

My submitted sculpture - Switch Off to Switch On - is in this show. My mixed media piece deals with a well known scientific obsession with intelligence, and was also created a little obsessively - so many carefully selected and snipped pieces make up the collaged section.

A My Little Pony customisation has been an intended art project of mine for 2 years, with a custom bait purchased in late 2006. Finally in late 20o8 after seeing some amazing MLP customisations online, I was inspired. I researched to see what has been done by other MLP customisers and basic MLP customisation tips and materials. After going back to the drawing board and really putting some thought into it, this is the result.

An exploration of materials. Both sides dual on a map of the world. The red side represents Growth and is customised using only natural, organic materials such as mother of pearl from abalone, bone, feathers from a pet Eclectus parrot, fish quills, dried plants and insect parts, shells, and assorted gum nuts. The black side represents Progress and is customised in a steampunk style using various toy, jewellery, optical and watch parts in plastic, metal and glass.

Progress was made before Growth, so Growth was designed to be a natural reflection of Progress. The pieces' designs are indicative of the way they move around the board and in the case of the King and Queen, show their relationship to each other. Since the Queen is able to move in all directions, elements of all the other pieces are incorporated into her design.

Detail; a pawn and knight from Growth. All of the collected feathers were shed naturally, and trimmed to shape. The knight's eyes are inlaid mother of pearl from an abalone shell, while the horn is beef bone. Borneo and Indonesia are visible on the chess board's map.

Inspired by an article in National Geographic about the most Southern polar bears which are in Hudson Bay, Canada. The population has been forced to migrate North permanently. This is due to climate change increasing the temperature and reducing the ice sheet surface area.

This piece was inspired by a recent development in genetic engineering and neuroscience. When a particular gene CdK5 is switched off in mice it affects a brain enzyme receptor linked to a youthful brain activity in mice.

The sculpture uses a popular children's toy involving a maze and ball. The original path of the ball becomes the path from 1999 discoveries in neuroscience, through to Doogie the GE mouse in 2001, and finally the aforementioned discovery in 2007. The collage made of hardware catalogue clippings, has been carefully trimmed to fit around the original toy maze. It's in the shape of a mouse brain as viewed from the top.

After seeing the exhibition and owning the book 'A Gap in Nature' by Peter Schouten, in which the Dodo is prominently featured, I was inspired to create my own dignified dodo artwork. Historically the dodo has been depicted as a slightly silly bird. Schouten bucked that trend beautifully. The original scientific name for the dodo was Didus ineptus reflecting the period lack of respect for the species. It's now known as Raphus cucullatus.

This is a reworking of that initial artwork which incorporated a vintage dodo depiction with the old scientific name. As a completely new drawing it is not only more anatomically 'correct' and clear', because I found a better source book showing general bird anatomy, but the hatching and shading is probably the best I've ever done.
